Oct 14, Noh Theater live at Portland Japanese Garden

by Lynn Moyers on October 4, 2017

This fall, the Portland Japanese Garden is bringing acclaimed actors from Japan for “Noh On Stage: Walking with the Spirits.” Two performances of Noh Theatre will take place on October 14th in the newly opened Cultural Village, designed by Kuma Kengo.

The Garden’s backdrop of towering Douglas Firs will be a unique opportunity to see this ancient art form and Japan’s most prestigious performing art.  Through artful tilting hand-carved masks as well as channeling the spirit of the character itself, four Kyoto-based Noh actors will transform themselves into an ancient spirits. Arrayed in gorgeous brocade costumes, these masked spirits work out questions of tormented pasts or hidden truths that haunt them in the afterlife.
